The Province of Palawan, also referred to as Palawan, is a group of islands in the Philippines’ Mindoro area. With an approximate total area of 14,649.73 square kilometers (5,656.29 square miles), it is the largest province in the nation. The main island of Palawan is long and narrow, and it’s surrounded by many smaller islands and islets, adding up to roughly 1,780 in total. Some notable groups of islands include the Calamianes Group, which includes Busuanga, Coron, Culion, and Linapacan islands to the northeast. Balabac Island sits off the southern tip of Palawan, separated from Borneo by the Balabac Strait. The Sulu Sea’s Cuyo Islands are part of Palawan as well.
Further, to the west of Palawan, there is a group of islands known as the Spratly Islands. The Philippines recognizes these islands as belonging to Palawan, despite the fact that they are contested territory and far distant. They are referred to as the “Kalayaan Group of Islands” locally.
